What your auto insurance coverage should include

Although insurance coverage varies by province, the points below represent the typical coverages you will need to have before you can use your vehicle:

Third-Party Liability: If you are involved in a car accident and are held legally liable for injuries to others, or damage to another person's vehicle or property, your insurance company will pay up 'up to the total amount stated in your policy. You are responsible for amounts that exceed this limit.

Accident benefits: These benefits cover medical expenses not covered by the provincial health insurance plan as well as loss of income resulting from a car accident. In some provinces, caregivers may be eligible for additional benefits. Benefits are paid regardless of fault. Not available in Quebec.

Uninsured Automobile: This coverage protects you and your family in the event of injury or death caused by an unidentified (hit-and-run) or uninsured motorist. It also covers damage caused to your vehicle by an identified but uninsured motorist. This warranty is not offered in Quebec. Vehicle damage is not covered in Alberta, Yukon, and the Northwest Territories.

Direct Compensation - Property Damage: This coverage, available only in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Ontario, and Quebec, covers the cost of loss or damage to your automobile in an accident for which you were not entirely responsible. For you to be eligible, the other driver must be identified, insured, and found to be at least partially responsible. In some provinces, you can no longer sue someone for damage to your automobile.

Your insurer will calculate your degree of fault for the accident and the value of your deductible to determine the compensation you will receive. You will be paid if you were not at all or partially responsible for the accident. Be sure to review your auto insurance policy so that you fully understand its details, limitations, and exclusions.

Advantageous protection

You may wish to purchase additional insurance to ensure that you are fully protected in the event of a car accident, theft, or property damage. Below are some possible options.

Collision: In the event of a collision, you are protected up to the cost of repairs or the cash value of your vehicle, subject to your deductible.

Specified perils: This option protects you against specific perils, such as fire, lightning, theft*, windstorms, earthquakes, hail, explosions, riots, and others.

Comprehensive (All perils except collision or upset in Quebec/Accidents without collision or upset in NB): This option covers all losses incurred by your vehicle, except those covered by the Collision guarantee. . Here are a few examples: vandalism, theft, and falling or flying objects.* Exclusions to this coverage are explained in your insurance policy. A deductible may apply.

*Multiple Perils (All Perils Except Collision or Upset in Quebec/Accidents without Collision or Upset in NB) and Specified Perils do not provide any protection against the theft of your vehicle if it is stolen by a member of your household or an employee whose duties include the use and maintenance of your car.

All Perils: All Perils coverage includes both Collision and Comprehensive coverage (All Perils Except Collision or Upset in Quebec/Accidents without Collision or Upset in NB) and covers the theft of your vehicle by a person living under your roof or by an employee.

The most common combination is collision and non-collision or upset coverage.

Optional benefits and riders

For additional protection, you can add the following options to your insurance policy:

Accident Amnesty: If you purchase Accident Amnesty coverage, your first accident will not increase your insurance premiums if you are licensed to drive and have been accident-free for six-year. In Quebec, this benefit is not sold as a separate rider since it is already included in the provincial plan.

Loss of Use: If your vehicle is damaged in an accident, stolen, or destroyed, this endorsement covers the cost of temporary travel or alternative transportation, such as car rental or bus tickets. You will be covered up to the maximum amount stated in your policy or until your vehicle is found or repaired, or a settlement offer is made.

Third-Party Liability for Damage to Vehicle You Do Not Own: This endorsement could protect you if you cause damage to a vehicle that you do not own but have custody and control of, such as a rental car.

Protection Rider: You are entitled to additional benefits if you are involved in an accident with a motorist who does not have sufficient protection to cover the costs of injury or death. This protection only applies if the other motorist's insurance coverage is lower than yours.

Limited Depreciation Waiver: This endorsement protects you against the depreciation of a new vehicle if it is declared a total loss as a result of an accident and needs to be replaced. It is only available for the first five years of lease or vehicle ownership. You may receive an amount up to the price you paid for the vehicle or the manufacturer's suggested price. Some items on the sales invoice, such as administration costs, may not be covered. You can add this endorsement if you have purchased the following coverages: Collision and Comprehensive (All perils except collision or upset in Quebec/Accidents without collision or upset in NB), Collision and Specified Perils, or All Perils.

Additional warranty: You can also take out a warranty for a stereo system or equipment installed after the purchase of the vehicle.
